Alright, I admit, Facebook has much influence on me that an article about it has actually preceded this article discussing what a social network is.

Anyhow, Wikipedia defines a social network as “a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called “nodes”, which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency” and different forms of relationships.

It’s as straightforward as it can be – it’s a network for socialization.

Social Networking Sites

Bring it online and you have a social network that exists and interacts with each other on the Web and the Internet. These are what they refer to as Social Networking Sites.

Examples of social networking sites are Facebook, Friendster, Multiply, and MySpace, among a myriad of others. For a list of more than a hundred social networking websites around the globe, check this out.
