I started a monthly top commenter contest at my NomNom Club food blog since late last year. I used to manually count them on a monthly basis (ikr). Thank the heavens for plugins such as the simple but helpful Top Commentators Widget. 
WordPress plugin directory described it as “a sidebar widget [that] show[s] the top commentators in your WP site.” Just what I needed to automate the statistics for identifying my top commenters / commentators.

Now, getting my top monthly commenter is a click of the setting away from the widget. Other flexibilities I like that it provides include number of list, date range in days, and reset/refresh of the list. The URL link of the commenter also lends authenticity to the commenters.
Life is easier with plugins. I highly recommend the Top Commentators widget WordPress plugin as well if you have a similar need.
