Educational Advocacies

There’s no denying the widespread influence of social media these days. Aside from the usual brand and commercial campaigns who are most active in tapping that opportunity, advocacies are also benefiting from these phenomenon -  in particular, educational advocacies.

I came across two relevant educational advocacies recently that has tapped social media to spread awareness about their project.

BeBetter.com.ph

Be Better

The first is the Be Better website which promotes improving learning through reading, among others. It was started by educational entrepreneurs and husband-and-wife team Jerry Vicente Catabijan and May Jovero-Catabijan of Saint Mary’s Publishing Corporation (SMPC).

They believe that one has to be a dedicated reader to become a lifelong learner. They started www.bebetter.com.ph which provides free articles on a variety of topics like teaching tips, book features, profiles on writers and other educators. Developed by a dedicated editorial team, the website also has other contributing writers who are teachers themselves and welcomes more contributors.

Google the phrase “be better through reading” or “bebetter.com.ph” and you will most probably come across an article or two reviewing the educational website. They also have a Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/BeBetterPhil.

Together with a full roster of year-long, youth-enriching activities such as creative writing workshops, HP‘s pioneering A+ campaign encourages Filipino students to achieve academic excellence in school with the help of HP’s ultra-low cost Original HP cartridges while HP Ink Advantage printers are made affordable with school projects and academic requirements in mind.

A major component of the A+ campaign is Write&Read, a collaborative story-writing program that HP is launching with the Department of Education-National Capital Region that aims to inspire creativity in Filipino students. The program spreads the inspiration through CNN Hero of the Year and Lakandula Award recipient Efren Peñaflorida as its campaign ambassador, who championed youth literacy through the Dynamic Teen Companykaritonclassroom to educate children in far-flung areas of the country.

We will be able to work hand in hand in enriching the learning experience of children and inspire a growing interest in writing and reading, two of the most important and fundamental skills in education,” said Dr. Milagros Quiñones, English Supervisor, DepEd-NCR.

Education is life-changing, and writing and reading is where it all starts…It is through is through colorful prints that students are able to appreciate and embrace education even more as it will embrace them back and enable them to change their lives for the better,” said Efren Peñaflorida.

Open to grades 4 to 7 and high school students from March 1 to May 30, 2012, the competition is set to recognize Metro Manila’s top 10 young writers who will join the ranks of young Filipino authors. The competition will also publish a book compilation of the winning short story entries.

The HP  A+ campaign is a part of HP’s advocacy of enriching the lives of children though technology, innovation and meaningful activities that foster creativity, personal development and better education in the Philippines.  With ‘Be Better‘, these kinds of projects are what the Philippine online and social media community need to foster education, online and offline.
